What Is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that consists of fat tissue. Unlike BMI, which only uses height and weight, body fat percentage gives a more direct picture of body composition — the ratio of fat to lean mass (muscle, bone, water, organs).

This calculator uses the US Navy method, which estimates body fat from circumference measurements. It is one of the most practical and reasonably accurate methods available without specialized equipment.

How to Measure Correctly

  • Waist: Measure horizontally at the narrowest point of your torso, usually at or just above the belly button. Exhale normally before measuring.
  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), sloping slightly downward at the front.
  • Hips (women only): Measure at the widest point of your hips and buttocks, keeping the tape horizontal.

Note: The US Navy method has a margin of error of ±3–4%. For more accurate body fat measurement, DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing is recommended. These results are estimates for general reference only — not for clinical use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For men, 14–24% is generally considered healthy for non-athletes. For women, 21–31% is healthy. Athletes and highly fit individuals may have lower percentages. Very low body fat (below essential fat levels) can cause hormonal and health problems.
Is body fat percentage better than BMI?
Body fat percentage gives a more complete picture of body composition than BMI, especially for muscular individuals. However, it is harder to measure accurately without equipment. Both measures have their place — BMI for quick screening, body fat % for deeper assessment.
Can I lose body fat without losing weight?
Yes. This is called body recomposition — building muscle while losing fat. The scale may not move much, but your body fat percentage decreases as lean mass increases. This is common with resistance training combined with adequate protein intake.
How often should I measure my body fat?
Every 4–8 weeks is a reasonable frequency. Body fat changes slowly — daily measurements are not meaningful and can cause unnecessary frustration. Track trends over months, not days.
